Roger was one of those gentle souls you couldn’t help but to admire. He was more of a grade school buddy and reluctantly our paths, in high school, never crossed all that much. I do remember going to Cub Scout meetings at his house (a grand old Queen Anne) on Tyler I believe, not too far from Washington school. Good times. Rest in peace my friend.

Roger and I were like brothers and were true friends. His parents were my God parents and it was like sharing an extended family. We shared many an adventure in and around their large home at NW 6th and Tyler Streets.  Those were the days when, in Corvallis, kids with bicycles could venture just about anywhere - and we did.  Our fathers were business partners (Stover, Evey, and Jackson Appliances), we grew up together in the Presbyterian Church including its Boy Scout Troop.  We were in school together beginning with 2nd grade at Washington Elementary, Highland View Jr. High, Corvallis High School, and Oregon State University.  Through it all Roger was a good and positive person.  He was the epitome of the eternal optimist which showed up in his "I can do this / You can do this / We can do this together" approach to life.  This world view continued with him into his focused religious vocation and life and became, in a real sense, an eternal hope that sustained him through decades of significant health challenges.  It as a promise that he shared regularly many others through his years as a pastor. That journey took on a new form when his tired body lost a brief battle with cancer.  Peace be with you, Roger.

Tim, I immediately thought of you with the news of Roger's passing. I knew your dad's were business partners and no doubt you two had a close friendship throughout life. My sympathy and prayers are for you as well as Roger's family and all who knew him in our school years.

Tim, I never knew the backstory of you and Rogers relationship and that of your family. It is an amazing truth that few of us go through life with truly lifelong friends that begin in childhood. Your relationship with Roger surely was a gift from God and I had no idea he had  become a pastor. What a blessing he was for all those lives he touched thru the  years and especially yours, and I can only imagine how much he will be missed by you.  As you noted he definitely had a glass half full spirit which I am sure was exemplified in his ministry😊 However the good news is he has reached his eternal homeand and no longer is suffering and is  waiting for the rest of us to join Him!

Roger A. Evey, 73, of
Morro Bay,
California, a devoted husband,
father, and pastor
passed away
peacefully after a
brief battle with
cancer on August
21, 2025. Affectionately known as "The Miracle Man," Roger
endured many health struggles over the years, including
Polycystic Kidney Disease (dialysis for 22 years), a stroke,
and heart surgeries.
Born in 1951, Roger grew up in Corvallis, OR and graduated
from Portland State University. One of his most cherished
college experiences was singing with the Oregon State
University Choralaires in a six-week European tour.
He married his high school sweetheart, Lynn Meek, in June
1972. Together, they worked at the Portland Foursquare
Church until 1987.
Roger and Lynn felt a calling to leave Portland to found
Morro Bay Foursquare Church, "The Gathering Place,"
where all people are welcome and can find the love of God.
Roger led this congregation for over three decades. Music
was a large part of Roger’s ministry where he often led
worship on his guitar.
Beyond the walls of his own church, Pastor Evey was active
in uniting Christians across different congregations. He led
the local Pastors prayer group and organized the
community Easter Sunrise service and the annual Blessing
of the Fleet. Roger had a unique ability to bridge gaps
between different parts of the community. He was widely
beloved and in 2005 was named Morro Bay Citizen of the
Year.
Roger was known for his generous heart, gardening
prowess, musical gifts, and his large, loving family.
Although he called himself an introvert, every person he
met became part of his circle of friends.
At the heart of Roger’s life was God, whom he served
together with his family by singing in church, organizing
youth camps, and helping neighbors in need. Roger is
survived by his wife Lynn, their six children Rebecca, Joel,
Kristen, Jonathan, Matthew, and Tricia, and his siblings
John, Sue Hoyt, and Jane Teater. He also leaves a church
community that he shepherded from its humble
beginnings.
